Can you believe its December!!! AHH! I hope your Holiday season is going well and you are keeping on the healthy path. If you have fallen off the healthy wagon, don’t fret! I am here to help with a few holiday health tips! What are you doing for the holidays? I am in the midst of clinics at the veterinary hospital as well as finishing up classes this semester for my masters. I just spent all last weekend and this week (I do get my Hammer & Chisel workouts in! NEED the stress relief!) working on a presentation and studying for my cardiovascular surgery class exam. The test is on Monday- Wish me luck please!! I am EXCITED though to go home to NY for the holidays. I get back to Denver just in time to work on my birthday December 28th. No I am not going to tell you how old I am (well lets just say I grew up yearning to be a member of the Baby-sitters club, loved to watching Fraggle Rock and I wore fluorescent neon clothing my mom made for me – why am I admitting this?)
Have you been seeing the posts about Hammer & Chisel? The results are amazing from the test group and I personally know a few of the people involved so this totally real and game changing. I have not felt this SORE (thank goodness for the Recover & Recharge supplements!!) since I did P90X in 2011.
I’m going to be starting a big challenge group for just people doing H&C and I plan to start it on January 4th, although people can start before then if they don’t want to wait. Anyway back to those TIPS I promised…I know you must be thinking, it’s the holidays, there go my health goals. Are you saying to yourself, “I’ll pick up after the New Year?” STOP 😛 and Let’s make this the Healthiest Holiday Season YET! Get Ready to be the Center of Healthy Attention and Inspire others! I’m here to help you with these Health Tips to Survive the Holidays.
Holiday Fit Tip #1. It’s not about the actual holidays.
What you do during Hanukkah, on Christmas Day or New Years Eve isn’t your major concern. It’s all the other days in between that will determine if your holidays are healthy. You may encounter holiday treats at random at work or at home from a kind neighbor bringing you a home-baked gift. These situations are more frequent than a binge on a holiday. Overeating on these Holidays Days is not going to get you out of shape. Just like doing things right one day isn’t going to get you in shape. It’s all the little things on a daily basis that determines if you are moving toward fitness or away from it. One of the best ways to stay Accountable is to join a Support Group. Just checking in each day can help you stay on track. I run a few of these a month and one is just starting! Contact me for details!
Holiday Fit Tip #2. Pick your top 2-3 favorite treats during the holidays and commit to having only those.
We’ve all got our favorites. List them, and stick to them so you can enjoy your favorites without consuming any “accidental” junk food you weren’t planning on.
Holiday Fit Tip #3. Relax & Let go of perfect.
We don’t expect it in other areas of life – school, work or in with our family members. So why do we expect “perfect” when we think about our fitness routines? You may miss a workout. In fact, everyone will at some point. It’s not the end of the world. Really. Just make sure you get the next one done. Consistency is key!
Holiday Fit Tip #4. Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t.
Every year I hear an endless parade of, “I’ve just been so busy with the holidays and family visits, that I couldn’t workout.” This year, focus on what you can do instead of what you can’t. Look for solutions instead of repeatedly dwelling on the problems and obstacles. I personally find sitting down and scheduling my workouts each week helps me stay on track. It is one of reasons I love the way Beachbody structures our workout programs, everything is laid out for you. If you follow the schedule and nutrition plan, you will be successful. High-intensity interval training, which burns the maximum calories in the minimum amount of time, can be a godsend over the holidays. Programs like Focus T25, Insanity Max:30, P90X3, Turbofire have periods of working out at high speed are interspersed with slower recovery intervals. 21 Day fix is also a great workout plan to keep on track with your nutrition with potion control and these 30 minute workouts get you results!! If you don’t have access to such program, do jumping jacks, jump rope, jog or sprint, alternating bursts of quick activity with a slower pace.
Holiday Fit Tip #5 Holiday Party Strategies
To avoid overindulging at parties, make sure you eat normally that day. Starving yourself beforehand often backfires. Head for the low-calorie foods — such as carrot and celery sticks, fruit and lean chicken — first. Put your food on a plate rather than snacking straight from the buffet, and then sit down to enjoy it. Do NOT Linger by the Buffet!! Later on, allow yourself a moderate portion of something truly rich and satisfying. If you do end up overeating at a holiday party, don’t the guilt from one mistake torpedo your plan for the rest of the holidays. Brown Turkey over a medium heat; set aside. Place Coconut Oil in large sauce pan over medium heat. Add Onion and Peppers; cook until onion is translucent (5 or 6 minutes). Add Garlic, cook for one minute, stirring frequently.
Add Turkey, Beans, Tomatoes with liquid, Wine, Chili Powder, Salt and Red Pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and gently boil for 20 minutes stirring occasionally.
Top with cilantro and cheese. Each serving contains the following 21 Day Fix containers: 1/2 Green, 1 Yellow, 1 Red, 1/2 Tsp.
Candy Cane Shakeology
1 scoop Chocolate Shakeology
1 cup almond milk
2 tsp crushed candy canes
1 cup ice
Place all ingredients in a blender and whirl until creamy. Add more ice as desired.

¼ tsp. ground nutmeg

After all, the holidays are a busy time filled with food and fun, so it can be tempting to overeat and skip out on the exercise this time of year. Here are a few ways to keep things healthy:
Be Festive About Exercise
You may not be feeling like getting up to go to the gym, but that doesn’t mean you need to be a couch potato either. Keep your workout festive and family-oriented by registering for a local holiday race or event. Your family will love it, and you’ll be sure to feel the holiday spirit while you’re sweating!
No one says yuletide fun has to happen inside. In fact, a day of sledding, skiing or other outdoor play might be the perfect way to enjoy the holiday season. And some hot cider afterward will be well earned.
Plan the Menu
Holidays always seem to be about indulging in rich, unhealthy foods. But planning your menu ahead and including several healthy dishes – like delicious roasted vegetables and lower fat/sugar desserts – can help you keep your eating in check.
Save the Sweets
This time of year, candy and sweets turn up everywhere – at work, at school and even as samples in the grocery store. Save the sweets-eating for a special occasion – like Christmas dessert or a holiday party. You’ll enjoy the treat even more if you haven’t been eating them on a daily basis.
